This course will introduce you to the major works of the Italian and Northern Renaissance from 1300 to 1600. Emphasis will be placed on understanding artworks within their original cultural contexts, paying particular attention to the production and circulation of art in an age of exploration and discovery. Key themes and issues of consideration will include the idea of a classical revival and artistic self-fashioning, questions of imitation and style, courtly values, art collecting and the ethnographic print, as well as the religious debates of the period and the changing status of the sacred image.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Close visual observation will inform written formal analysis.
  2. In addition, students will engage with secondary texts in art history in order to refine their critical evaluation of such scholarship and gain an awareness of the methodologies of the field.
  3. Students will become familiar with important artistic and cultural trends of the period.
  4. Ultimately this course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to formulate complex theses that address both formal artistic concerns and historical circumstances.
  5. We will examine a range of primary sources, both visual and textual, and learn to understand the different ways in which these sources communicated through style, language, and structure.
  6. Local and Global Perspectives: Students will enhance their intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and histories of local societies and the global issues to which these relate (CCI LO1)
  7. Aesthetic Inquiry and Creative Expression: Students will engage with artistic or creative objects (e.g., visual art, theatrical works, film) in different media and from a range of cultural traditions (CCI LO2)
