The major purpose of this course is to identify common threads through different major disasters throughout the world and from this examination draw lessons learnt that ought to be applied to limit their recurrence and mitigate the human and financial pain they spawn. The key question posed and framework for study: How are the myriad technical, emotional, economic, legal, public policy, financial, communications, ethics and international relations issues that necessarily arise in disasters best handled? Once posed we will develop an analytical framework for the implementation of the practical action in disaster prevention, mitigation and remediation.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Be sufficiently acquainted with the field of disasters to permit further study (eg. Masters programs) or entry level employment in the practical fields of risk assessment, safety improvement, resilience building or humanitarian disaster relief efforts.
  2. Capacity to identify and analyze the economic, managerial, legal, political, ethical, public relations, sociological, psychological, and international relations components of disaster prevention, management and remediation.
  3. Familiarization with major disasters of the past as a window into how disasters in the future may occur and the importance of a historical perspective.
  4. Refine research and presentation skills.
  5. Understand the human, organizational, cultural, and technological factors that lead to disasters.
  6. Local and Global Perspectives: Students will enhance their intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and histories of local societies and the global issues to which these relate. (LO1CCI)
