This course introduces students to the important managerial issues in information systems today, such as how to best use information technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness in a firm. In an attempt to improve students’ awareness and understanding of various aspects of business information systems, we adopt both a theoretical and practical approach. We begin with a brief overview of the necessity to study BIS, highlighting the strategic importance of BIS decisions. We examine various theories, concepts and strategies, with a focus on managerial challenges and best practices. Students will also learn how to use software to support business decision-making.

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how the effective use of information technology is fundamental to the value-creation processes of an organization and how it can be a source of competitive advantage
  2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of information systems to all organizations that produce goods and/or provide services
  3. Students will demonstrate awareness of how various software can help organizations to acquire business intelligence from the data they have, and the various software available to assist managers in decision making
  4. Students will demonstrate awareness of the different types of information systems available to organizations and their function in and across business units
  5. Students will learn about privacy, security and data preservation issues (CCD LO2)
  6. Students will be able to interpret, report, and synthesize data and present it in various formats visually (CCD LO3)
