This course takes an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to NGO and mission-based management based on the assumption that management principles vary significantly according to the context in which NGOs function. The course focuses on the operational, financial, and organizational issues of mission-based organizations – and understanding how some conventional strategies translate into a non-profit and mission-driven environment and others do not.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the overall external contexts in which NGOs exist and how these contexts influence the principal internal management environment of NGOs.
  2. Acquire conceptual frameworks and practice their use of for analyzing the external and internal management dynamics of NGOs.
  3. Critically analyze and compare mission-based management strategies across widely different contexts and arrive at useful conclusions about professional practices in this sector.
  4. Identify and adapt private-sector management strategies that transfer well to a mission-driven environment and understand why some strategies transfer poorly.
  5. Evaluate practices specific to the NGO and mission-based organizations, such as fundraising, stakeholder development, grant writing, etc.
