Examines the major tenets, philosophical perspectives, and critical orientations of literary theory from Plato and Aristotle to the present. Students study critical texts from literary and non-literary disciplines, schools, and voices that have come to impact the Western theoretical canon, including psychoanalysis, Marxism, Russian formalism, structuralism, deconstruction, feminism, queer theory, new historicism, and post-colonialism.

  1. Relate current debates in theory and criticism to the critical tradition to which they are responding
  2. To characterize the principle ideas of a selection of important literary theorists from antiquity to the present
  3. Use the thought of the authors studied to analyze literary texts
  4. Students will be able to engage in the writing practices and culture of their chosen major, adding to the skills acquired in the Research, Interpretation, and Writing classes to develop a personal, authentic disciplinary voice (CCR)
