TOPICS: FASHION MATERIALS & PROCESSES in Spring 2024 (CM2091C)

Fashion, as a system and an industry, brings new products to market every season. There are many different stages involved in fashion production, and each one requires its own set of skills and expertise. Throughout this course, we will take a closer look at the design phase, the material sourcing and the sampling process of Parisian luxury ready-to-wear. The first step is the design phase, where the initial concepts and sketches are created. It involves garment design but also print, pattern and color selection. After the design phase comes materials sourcing. This is where brands source all the materials and trimmings that will be used to create the garments.We will study the different types of fabrics and materials available, as well as their properties and origins. A third step is product development: the making of the first sample, with the right fit, the right size, following a paper pattern and answering the design team’s creative brief. In addition to learning about these processes, students will have the opportunity to work with materials themselves in hands-on atelier sessions.
