TOPICS: OLYMPICS REPORTING PRACTICUM in Fall 2023 (CM3091B)

This two-credit course is for students interested in participating in a newsroom-type reporting team focused on the preparations for the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024, the world’s biggest media event. The course is open to students who are enrolled in the training offered by the Olympics Broadcasting Service (OBS), which is on offer to all AUP students and recent graduates, and opens the path to full-time jobs during the Olympic Games next summer. The course is primarily recommended for students, both graduate and undergraduate, with experience and a strong interest in journalism. The group will function as a multi-media newsroom, producing text stories, news photography, video journalism and audio journalism pieces destined to be published on the Peacock student media platform. Like in any newsroom, students will fill the role of reporters – across the various media listed above – or chief editors and deputy chief editors. But there is also a need for researchers, newsroom managers and social media managers, roles for which students don’t need extensive journalism experience.The content of the course’s coverage will include all newsworthy aspects of the preparations for the Olympics, ranging from ticket prices, transport problems, infrastructure, security issues (especially around the opening ceremony on the Seine), preparation of athletes, and many others that will also have the attention of global media. The course will, in addition, seek to provide coverage about how the AUP community is affected by this global event, adding value for our core audience.
