SENIOR PROJECT (CM4095)

In consultation with a faculty member, the student undertakes a senior project related to the field or pratice of journalism and media production. Written projects are normally 25-30 pages. The project can take the form of a feature-length magazine article, a long-form piece of video or audio journalism, a multi-media production including iconography and illustrative material, or a strategic business plan for a journalism or media product such as a magazine or online platform.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Use critical thinking to formulate a key research question on a topic in communication, media or culture
  2. Understand research methodology and operate a relevant method in the research field
  3. Produce a critical literature review by recognizing strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature
  4. Collect data and analyze/interpret the data
  5. Use theory from past classes in your major and your overall university learning experience to critically reflect on the research findings, situating them in a context that you can help explain or would like to influence [e.g. in social or political life, in global, local, local perspectives; or with regard to questions of ethics, justice, or individual/collective freedom
  6. Develop an argument from the data analysis/interpretation
  7. Professionally present research outcomes and have a dialogue with the audience
  8. Articulate the value of your research and the skills it employs as if to a prospective graduate school program or employer: epistemology, writing, critical thinking, empathy, and ethics
  9. Students will apply the knowledge and skills that they acquired through both the core curriculum and their major’s requirements to a disciplinary, interdisciplinary, cumulative or project-based experience in order to express their growth and learning while at AUP (CCC LO1)
  10. Students will engage in the self-assessment, reflection and analysis of this process, preparing them for future success. They will be able to articulate this to future educational and professional interlocutors (CCC LO2)
