As the bridge-course for the major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, this team-taught course offers a multidisciplinary perspective on key questions of political economy. First presenting the similarities and differences between philosophical, political and economic approaches to political and economic rationality, the course offers varied analyses of representation and government, the commons, security, inequality and debt. The overall purpose of the course is to engage students, at various levels of theoretical abstraction and empirical precision, with the fundamental issues lying between ethics, politics, and economics.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Deepen their understanding of how the three disciplines of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics interact and differ in their approaches to political economy
  2. Develop a systematic understanding of how property relations, socio-economic systems and distributive outcomes are linked
  3. Educate their capacity for critical thinking with regard to the former
  4. Gain a thorough knowledge of classical and contemporary debates over key issues of political economy
  5. Train their abilities to differentiate and employ normative (“what is distributional justice?”) and analytical (“what are the origins of inequality?”) forms of argumentation in a coherent manner
  6. Students will apply the knowledge and skills that they acquired through both the core curriculum and their major’s requirements to a disciplinary, interdisciplinary, cumulative or project-based experience in order to express their growth and learning while at AUP (CCC LO1)
  7. Students will engage in the self-assessment, reflection and analysis of this process, preparing them for future success. They will be able to articulate this to future educational and professional interlocutors (CCC LO2)
