FRENCH AND CULTURE II (FR1200)

This course is a second semester Elementary French course, a continuation of level FR 1010 with emphasis on acquiring basic level of proficiency in the language and understanding the culture of France and the Francophone world. This course will enable students to improve their comprehension skills through the use of authentic audio and video material and to acquire vocabulary to face situations in their real life in Paris. The four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are reinforced and special emphasis is placed on pronunciation.In-class work will be supplemented by multimedia activities and real-life situations in the City of Paris.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to understand familiar words and very common expressions from their concrete and very immediate environment if people speak slowly and clearly
  2. Students will be able to understand simple short texts in everyday documents (small advertisements, flyers, announcements, regulations, inventory of fixtures) and personal messages
  3. Students will be able to write short and simple notes and messages on their daily life, their tastes and hobbies, or an event in family life (announcement, email, postcard, etc.)
  4. Students will be able to use a series of simple sentences or expressions to describe their loved ones, their current place of life, their work and their daily life, but also to interact in a simple way for simple daily tasks (setting an appointment, buying a train ticket, call a technician, etc.)
  5. Students will be able to interact meaningfully with French speakers and acquire a foundation to conduct their everyday personal and professional life in a francophone context (CCF LO1)
  6. Students will develop an appreciation for French and francophone cultures and be aware of the scope of cultural differences in their new environment, with the ability to recognize when such differences require negotiation (CCF LO2)
