Using the scientific method and data on humans, primates, and other animals, we will investigate the evolutionary basis of human sexuality, mating systems, and family structures. Why are there males and females, and how are they different? What are the underlying biological and social factors that shape human and non-human sexual identities and behaviors? Are humans “naturally” monogamous?

  1. Demonstrate a grasp of fundamental evolutionary and biological concepts.
  2. Evaluate the potential and limitations of science in helping us to understand human sexual behavior and reproduction.
  3. Identify the ways in which specific cultural beliefs might corroborate, or contradict, scientific evidence about human sexuality.
  4. Consider how a more sophisticated understanding of our biology and evolution might serve to open lines of communication and reduce homophobia, sexism, and other prejudice.
