“I’ve never belonged in a democracy,” said Adnan Khan, who was arrested in California at eighteen and educated himself during his 16 years in prison. Eventually Khan helped to craft and pass a law that effectuated his own release. In this course we look at how the carceral framework can challenge and reshape the way we learn, how we participate in our democracies, and what it means to be free. We explore ways that corporeal, emotional and psychic learning can be transformed through the experience of incarceration. In addition to reading historical, legal, and autobiographical texts on prison and freedom, we also invite formerly incarcerated people in France, Canada, Taiwan, and the United States to speak and lead workshops (in-person or online) with students.
