TOPICS: THE HOLOCAUST: HISTORY, LAW, MEMORY in Spring 2024 (HI3091A)

This course will study the history of the genocide of European Jews perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators during World War II. Students will have a general European perspective on the Holocaust but we will concentrate on the cases of Poland and France.

After introducing modern Jewish life at the beginning of the 20th century, antisemitism at that time, and the rise of Nazism, we will explore how the genocide unfolded, through the perspective of the victims, the perpetrators, and the surrounding populations. The end of the semester will be devoted to the legal responses to the Holocaust that developed after World War II, as well as to the memory of the genocide, with the inclusion of Parisian examples, including sites near AUP.
